Hunterian Art Gallery

Rethinking our Main Gallery

We're updating the layout of the Hunterian Art Gallery main gallery, creating a new temporary exhibition space and making some changes to the way we display items from our permanent collections. Some areas of the main gallery are closed to allow us to carry out this work.

Visitors can still be see a selection of items from our permanent displays and our Demon Drink exhibition.

Visitors can also see live conservation work being carried out on our largest painting, Gavin Hamilton’s Hector’s Farewell to Andromache.

Access to our Collections

Due to Covid-19 social distancing requirements and the temporary sharing of The Hunterian Collections Study Centre with staff and students from the College of Arts, we are unable to offer in-person research and teaching appointments for the start of the 2021-22 academic year.

We are able to offer a limited number of appointments to view collections remotely, via remote visualiser and video-conferencing facilities. We hope to return to normal operations  as soon as possible and will keep you updated on our website and social media. Please email for further details.

For all University of Glasgow teaching requests for Semester 2 in 2022 please email with the following details: class name and code, lecturer name, approximate student numbers, CMIS weeks of class and days and times. Lecturers will be contacted before the semester begins to establish object lists and any other requirements.
