New appointments at The Hunterian
The Hunterian is delighted to announce the appointment of Mike Rutherford as Curator of Zoology and Anatomy and Ellen Fenton as Head of Audience Engagement and Experience. The appointments follow the retirement of Maggie Reilly and Susan Ferguson after many years of service.
Mike joins The Hunterian from The University of the West Indies, Trinidad & Tobago, where he was Curator of Zoology. He comes to The Hunterian with a wealth of curatorial experience and a passion for communicating the value of collections.
Mike is a graduate of the University of Glasgow and his early career was at Glasgow Museums where he was Curator of Non-Insect Invertebrates.
Ellen Fenton joins The Hunterian from the Museums of the University of St Andrews where she was Head of Experience and Engagement.
Ellen has over sixteen years of experience in the museums and the heritage sector, with a focus on audience understanding, experience and participation. She previously held senior positions at the National Trust and an independent museum. Her early career was spent in both local and regional museums.
Director of The Hunterian Steph Scholten said:
“It is a great pleasure to welcome Mike and Ellen to the team at The Hunterian. They arrive at an important moment in The Hunterian’s 200+ years of history as a world-class university museum and I look forward to working with them.”
Mike Rutherford said:
“In many ways this post feels like coming home. I used to study in the Zoology and Anatomy Museums and to now be part of the team responsible for looking after them is a great privilege. I can't wait to delve into the collections, discover new things and share that knowledge with others.”
Ellen Fenton said:
“I am really looking to working with the team at The Hunterian and throughout the University. The Hunterian is one of Scotland’s treasures and engaging audiences with the University of Glasgow’s collection, offers the opportunity to work with diverse communities.”
Mike Rutherford has taken up post this week and Ellen Fenton is expected to take up post in May.
